September 13 is Kickoff Sunday when we begin our new programming year, including Sunday school. Livestream of the 10:15 AM service on YouTube also resumes that day. 

Volunteers needed! We are looking for people who don’t normally read the scripture readings to participate as readers in our Lesson and Carols service on November 29. We would also love to welcome more people as lay assistants, readers, crucifers, and members of the altar guild. No experience is necessary—we will provide training. If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved in our worship services, this is a wonderful opportunity to try something new! Dawn Jones is preparing the schedule of volunteers to the end of the year, so please email clerk@stbarnabas.ca by September 1 if you are interested.

Over the past several weeks, the Children’s Ministry Committee and Parish Council have been prayerfully discerning a vision for the future of children’s ministry at St. Barnabas.  At the heart of this vision is the hope that our children will be known by name, experience church as a place where they belong, and be gradually invited into the worshipping life of our parish in age-appropriate ways. As the ministry grows, future possibilities might include junior readers, servers/acolytes, children’s music, seasonal Advent and Lent activities, and other opportunities for children to participate in the life of the church.  

We are currently exploring different ways of supporting this vision, including:  

* a shared leadership model, in which two parishioners work together to lead and coordinate a lectionary-based children’s ministry; and 

* a Children’s Ministry Coordinator, providing regular leadership, teaching, volunteer coordination, and continuity as the ministry grows.  

We would now love to hear from members of the congregation. 

Perhaps you might teach once a month—or a few times a year. Perhaps you would enjoy leading a Christmas craft, helping with children’s music, supporting a special event, or exploring a more substantial leadership role. Training and mentorship can be provided where needed. Expressions of interest are not commitments. We simply want to learn more about the gifts, interests, and possibilities already present within our parish community.

St. Luke’s Hospital in the West Bank is operated by the Episcopal (Anglican) Diocese of Jerusalem. Alongside Hope has been supporting this ministry for many years, and more especially during the current war.

St. Luke’s serves a population of about 455,000 people, including 57 marginalized villages and four nearby refugee camps. But unreliable electricity and costly fuel make health care delivery a challenge during the best of times, or a crisis during the worst of times. 

In partnership with the Diocese of Jerusalem, Alongside Hope is funding the purchase and installation of 407 solar panels for St. Luke’s Hospital. “Light for St. Luke’s” will cost $352,000. Thanks to a generous donor, all gifts to Light for St. Luke's will be matched, doubling your impact.

A message from the Synod Office: In preparation for our Diocesan Synod, taking place October 23 and 24, the Synod Steering Committee has chosen a theme of “Living in Hope.” We wish to show a video presentation on this theme during our time together over the two days. We need your help.

We would love to have your submissions of photos or videos on how your Parish is Living in Hope. How does your Parish offer the Hope of Christ in its ministry, its worship, its mission? Please consider this theme, discuss it with your parishioners, and send in your submissions to the Diocese office by September 30 to ctubman@calgary.anglican.ca

The following request for financial assistance is from a former parishioner who is battling two types of cancer. 

To sponsor altar flowers, sign up on the flower calendar posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. As there is room for only one set of flowers on the altar, if someone has already signed up for the date you wish, we request that you choose another date. Cost of flower sponsorship is $60 and is included in the calculation of your tax receipt.

Please contact the office by Tuesday of the week before your sponsorship date to provide your dedication to be printed in the bulletin.
